Making Friends as an Adult: Why Friendships Change and Why That’s Okay

Friendships are such an important part of our lives, but making friends as an adult can sometimes feel surprisingly difficult.
At BodiBlossom in Eastbourne, we meet so many women at different stages of life who would simply love the opportunity to meet new people, widen their social circle and have more people to do things with.
It's one of the reasons we created BlossClub – our women's social club in Eastbourne designed to help women make new friends, connect and try new experiences together.
But why does making and maintaining friendships sometimes feel so different as we get older?
Friendships Change as We Move Through Life
Think back through your life and there are probably people you once spoke to every single day.
School friends. University friends. Work friends. Mum friends. Friends you met through hobbies, nights out, relationships or different stages of your life.
At the time, you might never have imagined not being close to them.
But life changes.
We move house. We change jobs. We have children. Relationships begin and end. Our interests change. Our priorities shift. People move away. Sometimes we simply grow in different directions.
A friendship changing doesn't mean it failed.
Someone can have been incredibly important during one chapter of your life without needing to be part of every chapter that follows.
Why Is Making Friends as an Adult So Hard?
When we're younger, opportunities to meet people are everywhere.
We're surrounded by other people at school, college, university, clubs and often at the beginning of our careers.
Adult life can look very different.
Work, children, relationships, caring responsibilities and everyday life can mean we don't naturally meet as many new people.
And even when you want to make new friends, there's another problem:
Where do you actually meet them?
Walking into an event alone can feel intimidating. Starting a conversation with someone you don't know can feel uncomfortable. And sometimes we convince ourselves that everyone else already has their friendship group sorted.
But there are so many women feeling exactly the same way.
You're Never Too Old to Make New Friends
Making new friends doesn't mean replacing the people already in your life.
You can love the friends you've known for 20 years and still want someone local to grab a coffee with.
You can have a best friend and still want to widen your social circle.
You can be surrounded by people and still crave more connection.
And you can reach a completely new stage of life and realise you'd quite like some new people to experience it with.
There is no age when your friendship circle has to be complete.
We're allowed to keep meeting new people.
Meet New People in Eastbourne with BlossClub
This is exactly why we created BlossClub in Eastbourne.
At BodiBlossom, so much of what we do is about helping women feel more confident, connected and able to experience things they might not otherwise try.
But we realised something.
Sometimes women don't need another class.
Sometimes they simply need somewhere to meet other women.
BlossClub is our women's social community in Eastbourne, created to make meeting new people and trying new things feel a little easier.
We organise different social meet-ups, activities and experiences, which can include things such as:
Coffee and relaxed social mornings
Walks and chats
Creative activities
Wellbeing experiences
Paddleboarding and outdoor adventures
Beginner-friendly workshops
Fun activities you may have always wanted to try but haven't had anyone to go with
And importantly, you don't need to already know somebody to come along.
In fact, that's kind of the point.
Come on your own, meet other local women and see what happens.
Some people might become great friends. Someone might become your new coffee or walking
buddy. Others might simply be lovely familiar faces you enjoy seeing at BlossClub events.
There doesn't need to be any pressure attached to it.

Could You Bring BlossClub to Your Town?
Eastbourne is just the beginning.
Our bigger vision is to see BlossClub communities across the UK, creating welcoming spaces where women can make friends and experience more of life together.
We'd therefore love to hear from women interested in potentially facilitating a BlossClub in their own town or city.
You don't need to be the loudest or most confident person in the room.
We're looking for friendly, welcoming women who enjoy bringing people together and would love to create opportunities for women within their own community.
If you'd be interested in finding out more about bringing BlossClub to your area, we'd love to hear from you.
📧 Email info@bodiblossom.com and tell us a little about yourself, where you're based and why you'd be interested in facilitating a BlossClub.
